The Barham was started in February 1913, launched in October 1914, and completed in November 1915 at John Brown Shipyard. On May 31, 1916, she participated in the famous Battle of Jutland and was damaged. Repairs were completed in July 1916. It was modernized from 1930 to 1933. In November 1941, it was hit by three torpedoes launched by the German submarine U331 in the Mediterranean Sea. It exploded when it capsized and sank, killing 861 people.
